Twice a year, California compresses its entire startup economy into a few zip codes. This October it happens twice in a row: SF Tech Week, October 5–11, then LA Tech Week, October 12–18. Fourteen days, two cities, just about every funded founder on the West Coast in the same rooms.

Here’s how I read it as a domainer. Founders are the buyers — not all of them, but the ones raising, rebranding, and launching are the entire premium aftermarket, walking around with fresh checks and placeholder names. A startup picks its name once. If you’re in the room when that happens, you’re not networking. You’re early.

So I went through both calendars and pulled the events I’d actually attend — not the biggest panels, but the rooms with the most buyers. SF first, then LA. One honest note up front: there’s no NamesCon-style domain event on either calendar. Nobody’s throwing a party for domainers. Which is exactly why the buyer rooms matter more.

14 Days. Two tech weeks, back to back — SF October 5–11, LA October 12–18. The highest density of domain buyers California sees all year.

The move
  • Apply now. Nearly nine in ten SF events need host approval, and LA’s best rooms fill the same way. The morning of is too late.
  • Don’t pitch domains in the room. Nobody buys a domain from a stranger with a business card. Listen for the tells instead: “we’re rebranding,” “we just raised,” “launching in Q1.”
  • The follow-up is the sale. A short note with three names beats a pitch deck every time. You heard what they’re building — now show them what it could be called.
  • Remember the math. A startup picks its name once. Fourteen days, two cities, every buyer in the same rooms. Be there when it happens.

Two weeks. Two cities. Every buyer. See you out there.
